Summer Vacations in Northern New England 1825-1900
This exhibition looks at the blossoming of the nation's tourist industry during the 19th century as the middle class grew in numbers and new forms of transportation, such as railroads and steamships, made distant places more accessible. New England, with its varied landscapes of beaches, mountains and lakes boasted a number of popular vacation destinations.
The exhibition will present a visual documentation of leisure travel in New England with views of many of the region's grand hotels and scenic sites. Advertising prints for railroad lines, steamers, and stage coaches will also be included. The contents of the show will be primarily drawn from the Athenaeum's rich collection of prints, photographs, maps and vintage guidebooks.
